Made By Us

Code of Conduct

Made By Us is a place that’s, well, made by us – we the people, working together to form a more perfect union, using history to shape the future of the United States of America. For that to happen, we need to ensure that everyone feels safe and welcome here. It’s on all of us to make this space as inclusive as possible – with room for discussing ideas respectfully, even if we don’t agree. We seek your support and collaboration to help flag behaviors that violate our code of conduct.

We commit to enforce and evolve this code of conduct as Made By Us grows.

Get Curious + Stay Humble

No one person is an expert on everything, and we all have blind spots. The focus of Made By Us is on learning and sharing, rather than criticizing, antagonizing, disparaging or using disrespectful language. We expect everyone who is part of our ecosystem to operate in that spirit and assume the same of others. We encourage everyone to notice when judgement arises and replace the urge with curiosity and questions.

Learn From Our Differences

We embrace our differences and accept that they make us stronger. That’s a deeply American creed. We welcome broad participation from all, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, color, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or any other characteristics. Just as our country has been built by many hands, our future rests on our ability to harness the many perspectives and lessons we each bring to the table.

Embrace Complexity

History is messy. We want you to bring your stories and experiences into the fold, and we provide evidence and sources as the foundation brought by our institutional partners. History is the playing field on which we engage difficult topics and conversations, seeking new understanding by exploring diverse interpretations. We won’t shy away from that here, and in fact ask you to get knee-deep in the complexity with us.

Acknowledge Facts

Made By Us brings history professionals to the table to help us navigate crucial context and factual evidence. We encourage curiosity and new perspectives on all aspects of the past and present, while respecting well-documented historical conclusions. Many facets of our past may be uncomfortable to face, but once we do, we can envision what we might do differently today to shape the world we want to live in.

No Room for Hate

We believe in upholding freedom of speech and encouraging robust, respectful debate. But repeated or egregious expressions of hateful, threatening, insulting, harassing, or abusive language or behavior is prohibited. Any behavior or language that is unwelcoming is strongly discouraged. Sexist, racist, ableist and other exclusionary jokes will not be tolerated under any circumstances. We will remove any comments or posts to this effect.
