Young people today, especially those in the critical life stage between teenage years and young adulthood, are seeking information on "how we got here" to shape their understanding, identity and participation in civic life. History museums, historic sites, archives and libraries have valuable expertise and credible sources to help.
Made By Us was born to meet this need, connecting young people with history institutions to inform and inspire their civic journey. Over many years, leaders from some of America's most iconic, beloved institutions, including the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, Senator John Heinz History Center, National Archives Foundation, Atlanta History Center, HistoryMiami Museum and New-York Historical Society, joined forces to develop this collaborative effort, launched to the public in 2020.
Since then, with Board leadership from the American Association of State and Local History, First Americans Museum, Charles Wright Museum of African American History, Conner Prairie, Colonial Williamsburg, Japanese American National Museum, President Lincoln Foundation, Utah Historical Society and Wisconsin Historical Society, and dozens of volunteer regional leads, advisors, and participants from hundreds of institutions nationwide, Made By Us has become the go-to source for connecting youth with history.
